HOW TO WEAR white

“How to wear white?” This seems pretty easy and obvious, but it’s actually not to a lot of people. You see, not all white garments are made equally. There are opaque fabrics, thin see through white fabrics, blue tone and yellow tone white fabrics, and white garments made from structured and loose, flowy fabrics. Each type of fabric comes with its own challenges in addition to the challenge of wearing it in white; which brings me to the question, “why is white difficult to wear?”.

White is a beautiful color to wear, especially in Summer. It comes across as heavenly and very clean, fresh, and elegant. I love wearing white year round(I don’t care about the ‘rules’). I’m often complimented on my white outfits. I’m surprised when the same people tell me that they love white, but they feel like they can’t wear white for various reasons. So, if you want to wear white but are too afraid to wear it because you think you don’t know how or don’t look good in it, this post is for you.

Contrary to what you might think, anyone can wear white. It’s similar to red in that way. Anyone can wear red, but they need to wear the RIGHT red for their complexion. It’s all about knowing which type of white works for you. To know this, you need to know your skintone and undertones. Are you cool, warm, or neutral? This is important because if you’re cool, you’d look best in a blue toned white. If you’re warm, you’d look better in a cream or yellow toned white. if you’re neutral you can wear both whites.

Undergarments

When wearing white, it’s very important to choose your undergarments wisely. Your safest bet is to go with a color that is the same as your skin tone, a true neutral for your specific skin tone. Never wear white, black, or a bold colored undergarment underneath a white garment because, unless the white garment is lined well, your underwear will be visible.

I like to wear an adhesive neutral toned bra or an unlined neutral toned bra with my white garments. Actually, I like all my undergarments to be seamless. If your garment is form fitting, consider wearing shape wear to smooth everything out. There are a lot of affordable brands out there, but I swear by 2 of them: spanx and target for shape wear. I like commando and hanky panky for seamless underwear.

Keeping it clean

The inability to keep white clean (or fear of not being able to) is the number 1 reason most people shy away from it. As a general rule of thumb, try to avoid wearing white if you are on your monthly cycle. If you must, then I would recommend Thinx underwear! They’re amazing and they actually work! I would recommend waiting until the end of your cycle to wear white, if you can. It is already nerve wrecking enough being on your cycle, wearing white makes the stress level go up even higher. Aside from our monthly cycle, there are many other things out there in this crazy world just waiting to splash or rub up on your white garments so we have to be prepared (LOL!!!).

Whenever I wear a white top or dress, I put the outfit on before I do my makeup and wrap a towel around my neck while I do my makeup to protect the garment from getting makeup on it. I don’t touch the garment while I do my makeup. Immediately after using foundation or any product I applied with my hands, I wash my hands. When I finish my makeup, I wash my hands one final time to make sure there is no makeup on them. I make sure to finish my makeup before leaving the house so I’m not doing it in the car, increasing my chances of ruining my outfit. I keep hand sanitizer and wipes in the car and in my purse so that I can always make sure my hands stay dirt free.

My number 1 tip for wearing white is carrying a tide-to-go pen with you at all times. These pens work and they will save your garment without the use of water. If you do happen to spill something tougher to get out on it, like red wine, use Dr.Bronner’s Castille Bar Soap (or liquid soap) on it. You will be shocked at how well this works. Just when you’re ready to cry your eyes out over your ruined garment, Dr. Bronner’s will save it. I know because I once spilled red wine on my brand new RHTeen white Duvet cover(over $200). I was so upset, but it was 11pm and nothing was open. I couldn’t rush it to the cleaners. At the time, I was using Dr. Bronner’s baby bar soap on my body. I knew it had multiple uses because I was in the bath one day and decided to read the writing on the bottle, prior to the wine incident. I used this bar soap on it for 5 days and the stain came out. During that time, I kept it soaking in the sink the entire time. I would drain the water every day, scrub it with bar soap, and then refill the sink with water and leave it in there to soak.
